Anatomy of a scam text: the $2,613 'Claims Department' lure

By Jeremy Smith, Founder · October 21, 2026 · 4 min read

It arrives looking official. A "Claims Department" has money for you — $2,613, a suspiciously precise number. There is a deadline: 24 hours. And there is one small catch: a processing fee before the funds can be "released."

Almost every manipulation tactic in the scam playbook is compressed into that one short message. Here is the breakdown.

Tactic 1: Fake authority

"Claims Department" is a costume, not an organization. No company name you can verify, no case worker, no number that matches anything published. Real institutions identify themselves completely — because they can be checked. Scammers stay vague — because they can't.

Tactic 2: The precision trick

$2,613 — not $2,600, not "about $2,500." Odd, exact numbers feel researched, as if an account with your name on it really exists. It costs the scammer nothing to type a precise number, and it buys instant credibility with most readers.

Tactic 3: The fake deadline

24 hours is not a processing window; it is a thinking ban. Every hour of delay is an hour you might search the number, ask a friend, or notice the fee makes no sense. Urgency exists in scam scripts for one reason: to outrun your judgment.

Tactic 4: The fee-to-release hook

The kill shot. Money you are owed should never require money from you first. Legitimate settlements deduct fees from the payout itself. The moment a "payout" needs a payment — a gift card, a wire, a "processing" charge — you are not the beneficiary. You are the product.

The three rules that end every version of this scam

This lure was built to rob. It was also, unfortunately for its sender, perfectly structured — which makes it a perfect teaching specimen. The Manipulation Detector flags all four tactics automatically, because pattern recognition is the whole game.
